Hi!
Something closer to home this week - I would like to share a speech by my wife's boss at an event for women in the legal practice. The conversation about women in the workplace is definitely important, but not something I plan to address in this newsletter for now. Instead, I want to highlight another message in her speech regarding choosing career paths.
Marina talks about her journey as a female litigation lawyer while starting her own family. She describes how she chose her career path and how she blends this with her role at home. Marina brings up something refreshingly different from what most senior lawyers discuss: the need to choose the path which aligns with one's innate nature. I found this to be a realistic and empowering view of choosing to stay in legal practice, and is great advice for any young adult making life choices.
"One key factor was that it suited my DNA. I cannot overstate the importance of finding what suits you best. Without suitability, you cannot have sustainability.
Suitability is not just about the area of work, be it in private practice or in-house – the environment must also suit you. Remember: you can change your environment, but not your DNA."
Hope you have a great week ahead!
James
